IN MEMORY OF SYLVIA NEWMAN

January 16, 1944 - February 21, 2021

Sylvia Newman was a long-time champion of choral music and music education. She was introduced to choral music by her husband, Arthur Newman, who was raised as a chorister at Canterbury Cathedral. Understanding the impact music has on young people, they made music a priority in their son’s education, providing him with piano and vocal lessons, and encouraging him to sing in community youth choirs. This eventually led to him pursuing a career in music, as a music teacher in the Toronto District School Board. A perennial concert goer, Sylvia supported many local choirs including The Toronto Children’s Chorus, The Mendelssohn Youth Choir, The Victoria Scholars, and Cantabile Chamber Singers.
